Genre: Pop Rock, Psychedelic.
Pet Sounds ” is the eleventh studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys , released on 16 May 1966. The album is characterized by being different from the previous works of the band. Instead of the usual rock and roll and surf theme that characterized, the album dominated the baroque pop with a more sophisticated lyrical content, being more reflective and sentimental.
“Pet Sounds” is undoubtedly one of the most significant albums of the 60s and the best of the entire career of the Beach Boys, considered one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of pop music.
The LP raises the Beach Boys to perfection both in composition and in the production, overlapping voices and instruments, and simultaneously creating a unique symphonic sound. The combination of unconventional instruments, guitars and traditional keys result in perfection, as we see in immortal songs like, Would not It Be Nice, God Only Knows Caroline or No.
The project was so great in Brian’s mind, he hired numerous musicians for the recording of Pet Sounds. In fact, the band hardly touched an instrument. Unlike the usual sound of the band, which is presented to us are string instruments, woodwinds and sophisticated arrangements.
The album is marked by compositions that deal with the fragile love, romantic disappointments and personal limitations, giving an almost perverse and melancholy air that acts in perfect contrast to the previous work of the group.
The LP had a significant impact on the development of pop music and rock in general, inspiring many musicians to use various musical instruments in their own recordings. It is even considered one of the most influential albums of pop music, rated number 1 in several lists of greatest albums of all time, in specialized magazines like New Musical Express, The Times and Mojo magazine.
In 2003, it was ranked # 2 on the list of 500 best albums of all time, made by Rolling Stone. This album is still in the list of 200 definitive albums in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
